Seeing Bukowski’s Bluebird

I don’t want to say a bunch about this, you know I could blab forever, but this is about beautiful words that a brilliant artist converted into an amazing visual piece. So you get two for the price of one today and anything I say can only cheapen it. But I’ll quickly mention that I was really excited to come across this animation, as a lifelong fan of Bukowski’s work I love being given the opportunity to view his work through the eyes of another, we’re really lucky to live in a world with so many talented people that take the time to share their creations with us. Bukowski’s work can heavily lean towards the depressive side but I think that he always tries to relay the need to self-love versus self-loathe, even though it can seem blurred at times, his words give hope to the clinically depressed, alcohol and gambling addicted low-lifes amongst us! And within his words he always passes on a sound message of empathy towards others. Enjoy!

The Bluebird

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.

there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he’s singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do
you?
