This might sound like a terrible thing to say, being that I’m a two year associate creative director veteran, but I’ve just recently learned to fully appreciate the masterful craft that is most commonly known as copy-writing. In my defense, during my years as a coder I had little reason to think about the copy whilst I went about producing websites against almost-too tight deadlines. We ran into the widow/orphan issue now and again but the reality was that like 95% of my relationship with the creative department as a techie was with the designers – I’d work with production…
About a year and a half ago I went through something intense, perhaps the most intense week of not only my professional career but maybe even my entire life. It was emotional, it was confusing, exciting, discouraging, passionate, desperate, exhilarating. … At times it was the lowest of lows and other times it was the highest of highs. It took me to the brink of sanity, questioning if I belonged in my profession and at times found myself questioning exactly who the hell I even was. During at least one point I thought I’d end my career flipping burgers, or worse spend
There’s something about seeing Randy Jackson wearing a biker jacket on TV tonight that gives me the sensation the shark has jumped on the whole Ramones look thing. The irony does not escape me that the ‘jumped the shark’ idiom comes from a moment in TV history when a once cool guy decided to water-ski over a shark in a…that’s right – a leather jacket. And I don’t wanna be mean to Randy, I like the guy – he keeps it real – he’s my dog yo (if you know what I mean?). I know he’s worn leather jackets before…
In my last post I thought it would be interesting to capture the books on our shelves. And I think think it’s an interesting idea – to have the ability to look back years later and see what books we had in what order. But I’m realizing it’s probably only interesting to us – to me and my family. It’s a lot of hassle to list out all the books and the authors and in the end I haven’t the will to bother to explain how we even came to own these books and whether or not they are even…
I like books a lot. In fact I like books more than I like reading books, if that makes sense? For me having good literature on my bookshelves is as interesting as displaying great artwork on my walls. One of our dreams is to one day have a room that is wall-to-wall books, the kind you see in the movies where you have a step ladder that has to be wheeled around to get at the really high ones. And there’s something about the direction that books are going in that kind of gets me down. I’m not against these…
Jacksons birthday’s coming up so I’ve been kicking around a few ideas for his party invite. It’s pretty lame I guess but it was cool how I did it all just with Firebug. Switched around some CSS values and updated some text on the page. Kinda reminds me of back in the day playing around with XSS and HTML injections – we’d mainly do it to test for security vulnerabilities, but sometimes we’d have some fun switching out the images and stuff. I’ve really only used Firebug in this way to tweak stuff I’m working on, but it was pretty…
I didn’t do it on my own, a couple of people came and went, but essentially it was just a core team of two – Dug and myself, and of course a creative director who had the vision to believe in us and just let us go crazy with it. And it wasn’t a wheel we invented it was a website. Its form and function was so well crafted the next agency that came along couldn’t help but precisely replicate it.
And that’s okay. Some creatives in the industry find it shocking, it’s the buzz of the city right now,…
The one where I blog about winter boots. I’ve lived here in Michigan for eight years now. That’s eight winters of shoveling an average of four feet of snow over a season. So about 32 feet of snow shoveled in the bitter cold, covering my feet with nothing more than my regular old sneakers – usually Nike, Adidas, or Puma, depending on who was sponsoring me that year. And I got away with it too, looking back it probably wasn’t the most sensible move I ever made, especially when you see the size of my driveway, but it’s been all…
